Sunshine Biopharma Secures Health Canada Approval for Generic Rivaroxaban

  • Sunshine Biopharma has received Health Canada approval for generic rivaroxaban tablets in 2.5mg, 10mg, 15mg, and 20mg strengths, the generic equivalent of Xarelto.
  • Rivaroxaban is indicated to treat and prevent deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, while also reducing the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.
  • The approval strengthens Sunshine Biopharma’s anticoagulant portfolio through its subsidiary Nora Pharma, building on the company’s existing presence with generic apixaban, marketed in Canada for over three years.
  • The company expects generic rivaroxaban to be available for shipment to Canadian pharmacies by October 2026, supporting its strategy to expand access to affordable cardiovascular medicines.

Takeaways:

Sunshine Biopharma’s approval for generic rivaroxaban (Xarelto) adds a high-volume, key anticoagulant to its Canadian portfolio and pairs with its existing generic apixaban to create a broader cardiovascular franchise.

This would increase competition in Canada’s oral anticoagulant market, which should drive pricing pressure on the brand and support Sunshine’s strategy of expanding access to affordable cardiovascular medicines, with pharmacy availability expected by October 2026.
