Abbott’s Volt PFA System Debuts in Canada

Abbott announced the first Canadian use of its Volt Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) System at McGill University Health Centre in Montreal to treat patients with atrial fibrillation. Health Canada authorized the system in April 2026 based on the VOLT-AF IDE study of 392 patients across 40 centers, which demonstrated safety and effectiveness in patients with paroxysmal and persistent AFib. The next-generation system features a balloon-in-basket catheter designed for improved tissue contact and targeted energy delivery, with fewer catheter exchanges and reduced radiation exposure. Integrated with Abbott’s EnSite X EP System, Volt also supports 3D cardiac mapping and the use of conscious sedation as an alternative to general anesthesia, potentially improving procedural efficiency and recovery.

Sanofi Inaugurates $925M (CAD) Flu Vaccine Manufacturing Facility in Canada

Sanofi inaugurated the Charles Best Building in Toronto, a CAD $925 million flu vaccine manufacturing facility adding end-to-end vaccine production capacity in Canada and strengthening preparedness for future influenza pandemics. The investment includes C$415 million from the Government of Canada and C$55 million from Ontario and is expected to create approximately 300 skilled jobs. The facility will manufacture Fluzone High-Dose, an influenza vaccine indicated for adults aged 65 and older that contains four times the antigen of standard-dose vaccines. Fully operational and pending regulatory approval, the facility is expected to begin production in early 2027 for the 2027–28 flu season, expanding Canada’s domestic vaccine manufacturing capabilities.
