Sanofi Inaugurates $925M (CAD) Flu Vaccine Manufacturing Facility in Canada

  • Sanofi has inaugurated the Charles Best Building in Toronto, a $925M (CAD) flu vaccine manufacturing facility adding end-to-end vaccine production capacity in Canada and strengthening preparedness for future influenza pandemics.
  • The investment includes $415M (CAD) from the Government of Canada and $55M (CAD) from Ontario, representing the largest biomanufacturing facility investment in Canadian history. The expansion is expected to create ~300 skilled jobs.
  • The facility will manufacture Fluzone High-Dose, an influenza vaccine indicated for adults aged 65 years and older. It contains four times the antigen of standard-dose influenza vaccines and is designed to provide protection for older adults.
  • The Charles Best Building is fully operational and, pending regulatory approval, is expected to begin production in early 2027 for the 2027–28 flu season, expanding Canada’s domestic vaccine manufacturing capabilities.

Takeaways:

Sanofi’s new Charles Best Building in Toronto adds end‑to‑end flu vaccine manufacturing capacity in Canada and is set to become the central hub for producing Fluzone High‑Dose for adults 65+, the largest single biomanufacturing investment in Canadian history at C$925 million. Backed by C$415 million from the federal government and C$55 million from Ontario, the facility strengthens Canada’s domestic vaccine supply and pandemic preparedness, creates about 300 skilled jobs, and positions Sanofi to better serve the Canadian market and its global network (vaccines from the site are already shipped to more than 60 countries).
