AbbVie’s Boey Approved in Canada for Glabellar Lines

  • Allergan Aesthetics, an AbbVie company, received Health Canada approval for Boey (trenibotulinumtoxinE) for the temporary improvement of moderate-to-severe glabellar lines in adults.
  • Boey is the first and only botulinum neurotoxin serotype E approved for aesthetics, offering a rapid-onset, short-duration treatment option for patients seeking less long-term commitment.
  • The approval introduces a differentiated neurotoxin profile designed for patients hesitant about longer-lasting aesthetic treatments, with Allergan Aesthetics highlighting its potential as a “try-before-you-commit” option.
  • Developed by the makers of BOTOX Cosmetic®, Boey is expected to launch commercially in Canada in the coming months, while regulatory reviews continue in other countries

Takeaways:

Boey gives Allergan Aesthetics a differentiated entry point in Canadian aesthetics: a fast-onset, short-duration botulinum option that can attract first-time or commitment-averse patients without cannibalizing longer-acting neuromodulators. Because it is the first approved serotype E aesthetic toxin, it should help AbbVie broaden its injectable portfolio, create a new “trial” segment for glabellar lines, and potentially drive spillover demand into the company’s established BOTOX Cosmetic franchise.
