Apotex Secures Health Canada Approval for IHEEZO

  • Apotex  received Health Canada approval for IHEEZO (chloroprocaine hydrochloride ophthalmic gel 3%), a topical ophthalmic anesthetic indicated for ocular surface anesthesia during ophthalmologic procedures in adults.
  • IHEEZO will be available as a sterile, preservative-free ophthalmic gel supplied in single-use vials and is intended for administration exclusively by qualified eye care professionals.
  • The approval expands Apotex’s ophthalmology portfolio, which also includes Verkazia, Clobivis, and Aflivu (aflibercept biosimilar), reinforcing the company’s growing presence in ocular care in Canada.
  • Apotex stated the approval supports its strategy of providing high-quality ophthalmic treatment options for Canadian healthcare professionals while strengthening access to specialized eye care therapies nationwide.

Takeaways:

IHEEZO gives Apotex a differentiated, in‑clinic anesthetic that strengthens its positioning with Canadian ophthalmologists and complements its anti‑inflammatory and retinal products, making it a more comprehensive partner across the eye‑care treatment pathway. This should modestly deepen share of wallet in ophthalmology practices and reinforce Apotex’s branded specialty footprint, even though the anesthetic segment itself is niche and procedure‑linked rather than volume‑driven.
